Mark's Monthly Meetup

Please join me tomorrow (Saturday) at Del Ray Cafe, 205 E. Howell Ave in Alexandria, for my monthly meetup. No donation required. Just a place to sit and talk and (for most of us) eat. I love to know what's on my mind of constituents and other supporters.

Ralph Northam for Governor

With the vicious anti-choice, anti-LGBT, anti-labor, and anti-immigrant bills passed by the Republican majority that controls the Virginia General Assembly, it was only the vetoes of Governor Terry McAuliffe that saved Virginia from becoming just like North Carolina and Mississippi.

We must continue with strong leadership in Richmond. That is why I'm proud to endorse Democratic Lieutenant Governor's Ralph Northam's campaign for Governor. Delegate Charniele Herring and I were happy to spend an evening with Ralph and his supporters in Alexandria and I look forward to joining him for many more campaign appearances in the future.

Don't forget to vote in 2017!

Vanguard Award: Cannabis Legislator of the Year

What a thrill it was for a nerd like me -- who's never even tried marijuana -- to receive the Vanguard Award for Virginia Legislator of the Year, given annually to one politician in each of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia considered most instrumental in advocating for cannabis reform.

This year, I introduced HB997, a bill to decriminalize marijuana (and treat it like a traffic ticket), and HB996, a bill to allow first-time non-violent drug offenders to expunge the conviction from their record after serving their time and/or completing their probation.

I'm not pro-marijuana (except for those who use it medically to relieve pain). I'm anti-drug war. It's a terrible waste of time and money and lives to prosecute people who aren't harming anybody else.

Remembering the Holocaust

I was honored to be a part of Alexandria's Holocaust remembrance ceremony. The genocide committed against Jews and other groups by the Nazi's must never be forgotten. As we see violence and strive around the world, we must be committed to the words "Never Again."
